1999
Approximately 6000 people attended the 16th Annual Oregon
Mennonite Festival for World Relief on October 16, 1999 a. Funds raised through the sale,
donations and fundraisers totaled $80,500.
There were 215 items in the oral auction including 92 quilts. The auction, quilt
auction and silent auction raised $37,600. The top quilt brought $1275
while the top wall hanging went for $1000. Rachel, an Amish doll made by
local Mennonite artisan Larry Bardell, fetched $1350.
The "Teddy Bear Coin Power fundraiser" contributed $2800.
Teddy Bear cookie jars were sent to 24 Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches
in Oregon. These cookie jars were fed coins or dollars by the participating
congregations. The funds were designated for MCC refugee projects,
sheltering street children in the Ukraine or a literacy project for women in
Nigeria by the contributing churches.
The work of MCC was brought to life at the sale in the School Kit Booth.
Festival visitors paid $1 for the opportunity to fill a cloth bag with school
supplies which MCC sends to needy children in many countries. The
photo shows Iraqi school children receiving their kits.
North American MCC relief sales in 1998 raised over $4.2 million.
